A locksmith needs a wide variety of tools and accessories to stock his toolbox. His tools comprise
of a whole variety of tools; from lock crackers to electric picks. Nowadays, however, most
locksmiths also have
Lock pick guns.
A professional
lock pick gun
is made to speedily pick pin tumbler locks. These guns are a handy tool most times, especially
during emergencies when you would not have time to pick the locks manually!
There are basically two types of guns: mechanical and electrical pick guns. A mechanical gun has a
hammer and often a spring as well, that drives the blade against the pins suddenly when released.
Each blow requires a separate action by the operator.
Electrical guns use a motor or electromagnet to cause continuous motion of the blade. These
electrical pick guns can be categorized into two: motor actuated and vibrator actuated. Motor
actuated guns use the similar concept of mechanical guns, but electrically. Vibrator actuated guns
use an electromagnet to excite a resonant mechanical structure of some sort that holds the pick
blade.
Both of these picking guns speed up the picking process by working all or most of the tumblers at
the same time. Normally these guns have a straight and thin blade, also known as a needle, on the
end that is inserted into the keyhole. The blade itself usually has no features; it just works by
simultaneously bouncing all the pins to temporarily separate the bottom pins from the drivers so
that the cylinder can be rotated.
If you go online, you can find many sites offering these guns, which mostly come in sets. A very
popular one would be the
Snap Gun,
which was designed for law enforcement agencies to quickly pick pin tumbler locks. A
snap gun normally uses the primary law of physics, the transfer of energy, to compromise locks.
Most online sets come with picking needles, tension tool and instructions.
